The Attorney General of the State of Zacatecas, Cristian Paul Camacho Osnaya, acknowledged an increase in violent vehicle thefts in the state’s border regions, particularly in the southern and southeastern municipalities. This situation has prompted authorities to reinforce the presence of security forces and maintain coordinated operations with state and federal agencies to contain the crime rate.
During an interview, the Attorney General explained that the problem has been concentrated mainly in the region connecting Zacatecas with the states of Aguascalientes and San Luis Potosí, primarily at the hands of organized crime groups.
He explained that, although the increase has not been exponential, there is an upward trend that worries authorities, especially given the events of the past weekend. Camacho Osnaya reported that on Friday alone, three violent vehicle thefts were recorded in the Jalpa area.
He noted that these events are part of a complex situation affecting municipalities located on the border and require a coordinated response among the various security agencies.
The Attorney General specified that one of the hotspots is located in the area between Jalpa and Calvillo, Aguascalientes, where investigations point to the involvement of criminal groups.
He indicated that these types of actions have directly impacted the population, which is why security forces have expanded their operations in that region to prevent further crimes and apprehend those responsible.
He also noted that another area with an increase in robberies is the southeastern region of the state, particularly along the border with the municipality of Salinas in San Luis Potosí.
In these cases, he explained, the corresponding investigations have been opened in Zacatecas to provide immediate assistance to the victims. However, since the incidents occurred within the territory of San Luis Potosí, the case files are being sent to the Attorney General’s Office of that state for further investigation.
Regarding the possible perpetrators, the prosecutor considered that the robberies in the Salinas area could be related to a local gang operating in that region, while those occurring on the border between Jalpa and Calvillo are linked to a criminal organization.
He stated that the investigations are ongoing in both cases and that there is constant communication between the involved prosecutor’s offices to strengthen crime prosecution efforts.
Finally, Camacho Osnaya emphasized that the increase in these robberies cannot be minimized, and therefore insisted on the need to reinforce inter-institutional coordination and police presence in the areas identified as priorities.
