To commemorate World Day for Reducing CO2 Emissions on January 28, the Government of Zacatecas, led by Governor David Monreal Ávila, through the Ministry of Water and Environment (SAMA), launched the Sixth Annual Tire Collection Campaign (Llantatón 2026), its first edition, with the aim of reducing the carbon footprint caused by pollution from discarded tires, which severely affect the atmosphere.
The Secretary of Water and Environment, Susana Rodríguez Márquez, stated that this campaign strengthens Zacatecas’ environmental progress by promoting a circular economy for used tires through their comprehensive recycling, thereby preventing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from polluting the planet.
With these sustainable actions, the Government of Zacatecas contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 13, which addresses climate action, of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda.
The collection, generation, and transportation of Special Handling Waste comply with the General Law for the Prevention and Comprehensive Management of Waste and the Official Mexican Standard NOM-161-SEMARNAT-2011.
According to technical information and Mexican regulations managed by SEMARNAT (Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources), tires are considered Special Handling Waste due to their composition of more than 100 different chemical materials, including synthetic rubber, petroleum-derived polymers, steel, and chemical additives, among others. These materials, when in contact with other materials, cause irreversible environmental damage.
The head of SAMA acknowledged the public’s environmental commitment, noting that in just three days of the campaign, more than 3,000 tires have been collected, surpassing last year’s goal.
Thanks to the success of the Llantantón (Tire-a-thon), over the past five editions, 205.4 tons of tires have been collected, equivalent to 460,689.5 tons of carbon dioxide emissions that were eliminated without harming the soil, subsoil, water, or air.
Susana Rodríguez Márquez extended an invitation to municipalities, businesses, and the public to participate in this environmental campaign to ensure the proper treatment and final disposal of special handling waste, in this case, tires, which will be used as material for asphalt, waterproofing, rubber, and floor mats.
The campaign will run until January 31st, at the collection centers located in the parking lot of the Ecoparque Centenario “Toma de Zacatecas”, Vetagrande road, no number, from 09:00 to 15:00 hours; also, at the facilities of the company REMAP, located on Osiris road without number, Osiris neighborhood, from 09:00 to 18:00 hours, where conventional and mine tires will be received (only cut to no more than 50 centimeters).
