General Zone Hospital (HGZ) No. 1 of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Zacatecas successfully carried out its second organ and tissue procurement of 2026, a move set to benefit more than 100 people.

This achievement was made possible by the donation from a patient who had been declared brain-dead.

Erik Leonardo Díaz, the hospital’s coordinator for organ and tissue donation for transplant purposes, noted that this marks the third organ procurement—and the second multi-organ procurement—performed by IMSS Zacatecas this year.

“It is a heroic and praiseworthy act; this event allows us to address a national medical urgency. There is a need for a pediatric heart at the Federico Gómez Children’s Hospital of Mexico, which will make it possible to save the life of a child and many others,” he stated.
The specialist added that a multidisciplinary team performed the procedure to procure various organs and tissues, including the heart, liver, kidneys, bone tissue, skin, and corneas.
Finally, Erik Leonardo Díaz encouraged the public to continue strengthening the culture of organ and tissue donation.
