Rogelio González Álvarez, the mayor of Villanueva, Zacatecas, faced widespread criticism on social media after it was revealed that he used the council chamber for a private gathering where alcoholic beverages were consumed.
The incident—which led to a criminal complaint filed against the mayor by council members from the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD)—took place on May 27.
A major security operation was deployed in Luis Moya, Zacatecas, following a clash between the State Preventive Police and armed civilians in Coecillo.
In a video shared on social media—and subsequently deleted—González Álvarez acknowledged the incident, apologized to those offended by what occurred, and asserted that “no damage was done to the premises.”
Who is the mayor of Villanueva, Zacatecas?
Rogelio González Álvarez, known as “Chailito,” has served as the mayor of Villanueva since 2025, having won the election representing the Sigamos Haciendo Historia (Let’s Keep Making History) coalition.
He holds a law degree and a master’s degree in Financial Administration from the Autonomous University of Zacatecas (UAZ), as well as a doctorate in Public Administration.
He is currently serving his second term, having previously held the office of mayor of Villanueva from 2021 to 2024. He served as the municipal DIF (Integral Family Development) attorney from 2007 to 2010 and later as the municipal government’s director of sports.
What happened in Villanueva involving Mayor Rogelio González?
On May 27, the mayor of Villanueva was filmed by Carlos Eduardo Torres, a PRD council member, inside the municipal government building while allegedly consuming alcoholic beverages with two other people.
A second video released by the council member shows the exterior of the building, while the sound of tamborazo—a traditional musical genre originating from Zacatecas—can be heard playing inside. According to Torres, when the individuals accompanying the group realized he was recording, he was detained and forced to delete the videos; consequently, he decided to file a formal complaint with the Zacatecas State Attorney General’s Office (FGJE).
The alleged offenses include unlawful restraint, making threats, abuse of authority, and tampering with evidence.
What did the mayor of Villanueva say?
In a video shared on social media, Mayor Rogelio González clarified that on May 27—the day the incident occurred—he had visited the municipal cemetery to mark the tenth anniversary of his father’s passing.
He explained that, at his cousin’s request, he agreed to bring a tamborazo band to the Municipal Hall.
“Let’s remember that weddings, quinceañeras, and all sorts of events used to be held there. (…) That day, I said, ‘Let’s go,’ and we went in honor of my uncle Emilio González—who, by the way, was a very good mayor. During the time we were there, no damage was done to the premises; furthermore, my cousin paid for the band for the duration of our visit,” he stated.
He further characterized the publicizing of the incident as an act of “cheap politics” and insisted that he was accompanied only by a friend and his cousin.
As of now, the Zacatecas FGJE has not issued a statement regarding the complaint filed by the PRD councilman.
