INAH warns of risk to Zacatecas’ heritage due to informal trade

The director of the INAH Zacatecas Center, Carlos Torreblanca Padilla, stated that the municipality must strengthen the regulation of informal commerce in the capital’s Historic Center to prevent damage to its architectural and urban heritage.

The warning follows the city’s declaration as a Historic Monument Zone, which includes 169 blocks, an area of 1,052 square kilometers, and 827 buildings and urban elements of historical value dating from the 16th to the 19th centuries.

There is a risk to properties due to installations on monuments
Torreblanca Padilla explained that, with the new decree, the INAH has greater involvement in urban image actions, which will allow it to intervene in cases where properties are at risk. He gave the example that some merchants place electrical installations or metal structures on windows, which could damage monuments.

Although he assured that this does not jeopardize the registration of the designation, he reiterated the need to reactivate the position of the Historic Center Manager, who will be responsible for addressing issues such as street vending and improper commercial use of heritage buildings.

Zacatecas has commitments to UNESCO

The official noted that Zacatecas has three international recognitions: Historic City, the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, and the Wixárika Sacred Route, which implies a shared responsibility with the municipality before UNESCO to maintain the historic monuments in good condition.
