A devastating scene unfolded early Tuesday morning, July 30th, on the Durango–Zacatecas federal highway in the municipality of Vicente Guerrero, Zacatecas. A priest accidentally struck a man trying to cross the road. The impact was fatal.
The priest, identified as Father Edgar Enrique “N,” originally from Zacatecas, was traveling toward Sombrerete in a white 2009 Ford Escape pickup truck. He suddenly failed to see the pedestrian in time due to poor visibility on the stretch of road located at kilometer 205. The victim, Daniel García Almeida, 50, originally from Guadalupe Victoria, Durango, had just gotten out of a trailer, intending to cross to a nearby store to buy something to eat.
An unexpected farewell filled with faith and grief after the accident
After the accident, the priest got out of his vehicle to try to help the man he had run over, but when he realized he was no longer showing vital signs, he knelt beside his body, burst into tears, made the sign of the cross, and blessed him. Witnesses passing by observed the event, sparking shock and messages of solidarity, especially from Catholic communities in the region.
The accident mobilized members of the National Guard, the Highway Division, as well as personnel from the State Attorney General’s Office. Authorities cordoned off the area while the corresponding investigations were carried out. The priest was taken to testify and remains in custody while the exact circumstances of the incident are investigated.
