A tragic accident occurred early Tuesday morning on the Durango-Zacatecas Highway, leaving one person dead and approximately 54 injured, according to unofficial information.
The incident occurred near the Nombre de Dios bypass and the Melones Bridge. A gray Mercury Mariner pickup truck and a passenger bus belonging to a tourism company collided head-on, causing the latter to leave the road and overturn.
The driver of the pickup truck died at the scene. According to sources consulted by this publisher, Aurelio Álvarez Barrios, 64, originally from Nombre de Dios, died after being trapped in the vehicle. The bus driver and passengers were injured.
Red Cross paramedics and Civil Protection personnel arrived at the scene, rescued the injured, and later stabilized them for transport to various hospitals in the capital city.
Meanwhile, members of the National Guard Highway Division were involved in the rescue and removal of the wrecked vehicles.
Personnel from the Criminal Investigation Police (PID) and forensic experts from the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) were dispatched to the scene to retrieve the body of the deceased driver, whose identity is still unknown, and to begin investigations to determine the exact cause of the crash.
At the time of writing, the identity of the deceased and the names of the injured are unknown, so authorities are expected to provide more information shortly.
