In the context of World Environment Day, to be celebrated this June 5th, under the United Nations slogan “No Plastic Pollution,” the Secretariat of Water and Environment (SAMA) launched the fifth Tire-A-Thon.

The goal is to collect as many used tires as possible and provide them with a proper disposal, thereby preventing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from harming the atmosphere.

The Secretary of Water and Environment, Susana Rodríguez Márquez, called on the entire population to join and participate in Tire-A-Thon 2025, given that tires are a major source of plastic pollution. Their composition is 19 percent natural rubber and 24 percent synthetic rubber. When they come into contact with other materials, the damage to the planet is irreversible.

The head of SAMA expressed her gratitude for a citizenry that is aware of the environmental problems we face today and is proactive in joining the government’s environmental campaigns. “Thanks to your participation, in the four editions, we collected 154.3 tons of tires, equivalent to 446,049.6 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, which were eliminated.”

The 2025 Tire Thron is carried out under the circular economy, which allows for comprehensive recycling and proper disposal. In this case, the materials produced by a cement company, which operates under established standards for controlling atmospheric emissions, will be used to fuel the tires.

Susana Rodríguez Márquez emphasized that this campaign strengthens environmental governance, with sustainable actions that comply with Sustainable Development Goal 13: Climate Action, of the United Nations 2030 Agenda. The collection, generation, and transportation of Specially Managed Waste complies with the General Law for the Prevention and Comprehensive Management of Waste and the Mexican Official Standard NOM-161-SEMARNAT-2011.

The campaign will end this Saturday, June 7th. You can bring conventional and mine tires (cut to a maximum of 50 centimeters) to the collection center located at the Centenario Ecopark “Toma de Zacatecas,” located at Vetagrande Road, without a number, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
