On Monday, two armed attacks against security forces were registered in the municipalities of Luis Moya and Villanueva, Zacatecas, resulting in the death of one police officer and injuries to two others, as well as the death of one armed civilian and injuries to two more.
Security authorities reported that the first incident occurred in the early morning in the community of Coesillos in the municipality of Luis Moya, when members of the State Preventive Police were conducting security, patrol, and surveillance operations in this region located in the southeast of the state.
The spokesperson for the State Peace and Security Council reported that, in repelling the armed attack, one of the assailants was killed at the scene. It was also confirmed that one officer died in the firefight from gunshot wounds, while two others were injured and immediately transported for medical attention, where they remain under evaluation and are reported to be in stable condition.
It was reported that following the attack, an operation was launched and a vehicle with Aguascalientes license plates was located containing explosives. This discovery was made on the border between Zacatecas and the municipality of Asientos, which belongs to the neighboring state.
Attack in Villanueva
Hours later, another armed attack was reported in the town of El Salto, in the municipality of Villanueva, located in the southern region of the state. Security forces were conducting “strategic ground reconnaissance and search operations for groups generating violence, as part of ongoing operations to strengthen security and pacification in this region of the state.”
It was specified that, during this operation, Mexican Army personnel were attacked with gunfire by alleged members of organized crime, and the soldiers returned fire.
It was reported that, as a result of this operation, two men were injured and taken into custody by the participating agencies. Due to the severity of their injuries, both were transported for medical treatment.
The detainees were identified as José Ramón “N,” 27 years old, and a 17-year-old. It was also reported that, during the operation, two firearms were seized, along with various pieces of tactical equipment, including a bulletproof vest, a chest rig, and ten rifle magazines.
Members of the Zacatecas Immediate Reaction Force (FRIZ), the Mexican Army, the National Guard, and the Investigative Police of the State Attorney General’s Office participated in both incidents.
