The governor of Zacatecas, David Monreal Ávila, announced that he has formally requested Melissa A. Bishop, the U.S. Consul General, to lift the travel advisory that the U.S. government maintains for the state. “We are among the safest states,” he stated during the weekly press conference, La Informativa.
The governor based his request on the drastic reduction in homicides recorded over the past five years. Zacatecas, which experienced its worst security crisis in 2021 with 1,741 homicides—reaching 201 violent deaths in September alone—ended 2025 with only 149 cases. According to Monreal, the cumulative decrease between 2021 and the present has reached 91.4%, the largest reduction recorded in the country.
