More than 300 hikers and visitors from Villa de Cos, Zacatecas (the state capital), Tepetongo, Monterrey, Nuevo León, and the host municipality participated in the Second Annual Hike to Pico del Teyra. They described the trek on one of the state’s highest mountains as an excellent experience, although “quite strenuous and demanding.”
This hike, held on Holy Saturday, was promoted by the city council “to establish it as an opportunity to test physical fitness, boost tourism, and generate economic benefits for the municipality,” emphasized Mayor Mario Macías Zúñiga.
He reported that, to ensure the hike was “a high-altitude experience,” various safety measures were implemented for the group, such as hydration stations and teamwork.
He also noted that one hundred people had pre-registered in the days leading up to the hike; however, on the day of the event, they surpassed the number of hikers from the first edition of the hike.
He explained that the hikers began gathering at 4:00 a.m. on Saturday in the community of La Tasajera and set off for the site known as Lo de Castro, guided by municipal staff, led by the Director of Municipal Sports, Jesús Vallejo Alvarado.
Two hikers arrived from Tepetongo with visitors, stating that this was their second time participating in the hike, as they considered themselves experienced mountaineers.
Other groups mentioned being longtime hikers, although they affirmed that climbing Pico del Teyra was a challenge: “It was quite a strenuous and demanding hike, but we enjoyed the stunning views. We caught the sunrise and had a privileged view.”
One of the participants commented that he was originally from Nuevo Mercurio, a neighbor of Estación Camacho, and that he had set climbing Pico del Teyra as a goal, which he finally accomplished.
Other hikers said they were originally from Mazapil, although they reside in Monterrey, and were drawn to the challenge of climbing the difficult mountain. “It was a great experience,” they said.
