One week into the national teachers’ strike, which seeks the repeal of the 2007 ISSSTE law, members of Section 34 of the SNTE (National Union of Education Workers) in Zacatecas continued their occupation of the main square in the state capital on Monday. They have set up a permanent encampment there and blocked access to the state government palace and various government offices, including the Ministry of Education.
Both the teachers of Section 58 of the SNTE and those working in the Telesecundaria (distance learning secondary schools) are financially dependent on the state government and have their own demands and petitions regarding unresolved issues related to unpaid benefits and salary adjustments.
The occupation of the Government City complex, located on the northern outskirts of Zacatecas, has also paralyzed the administrative and bureaucratic apparatus. More than 9,000 state employees—from approximately 14 government agencies—have been unable to access the complex to perform their daily duties.
